Covington Businesses, Artists and Designers Come Together for CoSign
Prestigeous NEA supported collaborative program seeks participants
The American Sign Mueseum’s creative placemaking project, CoSign, launches in Covington on March 27. A rigorous competition, CoSign offers a unique opportunity for artists and designers to create new handcrafted signage for local retailers in the up-and-coming Madison Avenue business district in Covington. The process lasts six months with the unveiling of the new signage to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Art off Pike on September 28, 2014.
The defined target area for the project is the 400 to 900 blocks of Madison Avenue, and 7th and Pike Streets between Madison and Washington. Businesses located within those districts are encouraged to apply to the competition. Deadline for businesses to apply is April 10 and can do so at this link http://tinyurl.com/CoSignBusiness.
Information on the Call to Artists and Designers is available on the Covington Arts website. All artists and designers from the region are welcome to apply.
Any artist, designer, and/or local business interested in participating must attend one of the two CoSign workshops on either April 28 or May 6 at Covington Arts.
Developed by the American Sign Museum and the The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation, CoSign enhances economic activity in Greater Cincinnati neighborhood business districts by pairing artists, small businesses, and professional sign fabricators to design and install unique handcrafted signage for local retailers; and in the process, create an infrastructure to train the next generation of local signmakers.
CoSign launched an extremely successful pilot program in 2012 and achieved a remarkable outcome for both economic development and arts engagement for the Cincinnati community of Northside. The pilot, defined much of the process and made it easy to replicate and implement in in other neighborhoods and cities.

Remarking on why the project came to Covington, Eric Avner, Vice President of the Haile/US Bank Foundation says, “In recent years, Covington has become a destination. It is a city that embraces innovative projects focused on neighborhood revitalization.” Avner continues, “Knowing that arts and culture are core parts of the City’s economic development plans, it seemed like the next logical step for CoSign to take place there.”
In 2013, ArtPlace America granted the Haile/U.S. Bank Foundation $150,000 allowing CoSign to expand its efforts in Northside and then repeat the process in Covington, Kentucky in 2014. Additionally, The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) granted Covington Arts $50,000 to support CoSign.
