This special offering is generally intended for longer more extended poses, and to give professionals, students, and novices a chance to access the model in a condensed time period. Participants are welcome to work in various media besides drawing, while taking into consideration other participants and the integrity of the studio space. Artists are also welcome to come and go during the scheduled time frame, accessing the model and our space at their convenience throughout the weekend.

In conjunction with a solo exhibit of Kassan’s drawings at Manifest Gallery, the Brooklyn based artist will be offering two distinct studio experiences at Manifest’s Drawing Center. An intensive four-day portrait drawing workshop continues Manifest’s ongoing series of such courses instructed by prominent nationally known artist-instructors. The second offering, a more bite-sized opportunity for the general public, students, and artists alike will be a nearly four hour public demonstration the evening of Friday, March 16th, complete with wine and cheese reception and question and answer session.

Contemporary Portrait Drawing with David Kassan
March 10-13, 2012 � 10a.m.-5p.m.
Tuition: $550 (Student Rate: $400*)

Description: An intensive, 4-day workshop focusing upon drawing the portrait from a live model. Participants should anticipate a rigorous, yet lively course covering a full investigation of facial anatomy, accurate observational measurement strategies, proper rendering techniques for the capture of dramatic light and shadow, and direction on how to create a compelling contemporary portrait. This offering is open to all levels of experience, however, the workshop is best suited for those with previous basic drawing training.

The Portrait Now: Public Drawing Demonstration by David Kassan
Friday, March 16, 2012 – 6-10p.m.
Admission: $20 (Student Rate: $10*)
Payment at the door or in advance with RSVP.
Description: Open to the public, during this focused session, David Kassan will draw from the live model, demonstrating the techniques of observation, accurate measurement, and rapid recording of likeness. The artist will draw for approximately 3 and a half hours with a brief wine/refreshment intermission and concluding with a half hour question and answer session. Seating will be provided, and will be on a first-come first-served basis. Observers are welcome to come and go quietly throughout the evening’s demonstration.
We request that attendees RSVP by registering using the link below. The admission fee may be paid in advance, or at the door. Pre-paid attendees must check in at the door. Each attendee must register separately. Academic
reference is NOT required for student rates for this event. Valid school i.d. will be verified at entry.

Open Figure Walk-Ins Welcome: Walk-ins (one-time or part-time participants) are welcome. Each visit on a walk-in basis costs $10 per person ($5 student rate). This allows those who cannot find time to participate every week to take advantage of the value of Manifest’s studio program. NOTE: Walk-ins still must register via our registration page (see link below) and select the ‘walk-in’ option and include the date to be attended.
*FREE HIGH SCHOOL SAMPLER SESSION: Tuesday, February 28 High school students and teachers are invited to experience Manifest’s Open Figure drawing session about four times each year. Online registration is required in advance (free of charge – see link below). Students must provide contact information for their teacher as a reference. Space is limited to first-come-first served.
